lake effect snow warning

The United States is currently bracing for significant lake effect snow across the Great Lakes region, particularly impacting areas such as western New York, Michigan, and the Upper Midwest. This intense weather phenomenon is expected to create challenging conditions, including heavy snow accumulations, strong winds, and near-blizzard-like conditions.

Lake effect snow occurs when cold air moves over warmer lake waters, causing moisture to rise and cool, resulting in snow. The snowfall can be incredibly localized, with some areas seeing several inches of snow in just a few hours. The Lake Ontario and Lake Erie regions are experiencing some of the most intense snow bands, where over 12 inches of snow could accumulate in a short period, making driving hazardous and creating whiteout conditions

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has directed state agencies to prepare for these extreme conditions, with several emergency response teams on standby, including snowmobiles and utility vehicles. The state has also issued travel advisories, urging residents to limit non-essential travel during the peak of the storm.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts, prepare for potential power outages, and follow safety guidelines for winter driving. Officials recommend avoiding travel if possible and taking necessary precautions to stay warm and safe during this harsh weather.
