How to register your Name Servers (DNS) on Godaddy

To register your custom name servers (DNS) on GoDaddy, follow these steps. Registering your name servers is essential if you want to set up a custom DNS (such as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com) for a domain you own.

Step 1: Log into Your GoDaddy Account

  1. Go to GoDaddy.com and log into your account.
  2. Once logged in, navigate to the My Products section to access your domain settings.

Step 2: Access Domain Settings

  1. In the Domains section, find the domain for which you want to register custom name servers.
  2. Click on DNS next to the domain to access its DNS management page.

Step 3: Register Name Servers

  1. Scroll to the Settings section and look for Host Names or Manage DNS.
  2. In some versions of GoDaddy’s interface, you may need to click on Advanced Settings or Host Names.

Step 4: Add Your Custom Name Servers

  1. Click on Add or Create New Name Server to add a new host.
  2. Enter the name server prefix (e.g., ns1 or ns2) and the IP address you want associated with it.
    • For example:
      • ns1 > IP Address 1
      • ns2 > IP Address 2
  3. Save each entry after adding it.

Step 5: Update Your Domain’s Name Servers

  1. Go back to the DNS Management page for your domain.
  2. Under the Name Servers section, choose Use Custom Name Servers.
  3. Enter your newly registered name servers (e.g., ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com).
  4. Click Save to apply your changes.

Step 6: Allow Time for Propagation

DNS changes can take up to 24–48 hours to fully propagate across the internet. During this time, your custom name servers will become active.

Following these steps will set up and register your custom name servers on GoDaddy. This is often needed when hosting your site on a dedicated server or using specific DNS settings managed externally.
